[:en]October is the month dedicated to missions. The church celebrates both Saint Therese of the Child Jesus’ feast day, the patroness of the missions, and the Missions Sunday at the begining and the end of October, respectively.  This month, Catholics focus on missionary service and honor those who dedicate themselves to evangelization.

The Redemptorist missionary, Fr. Carlos José de Oliveira is an example of a religious man who has been on mission since 2007 when he received priestly ordination. A year and a half ago he was in Amadora, in Portugal, working at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish.

He said he has found open hearts to concretize evangelization and  the real fullfillment Pope Francis’ request: to have an operant church towards the most needy. “The missionary work carried out by us in all communities we are inserted is of paramount importance to church vitality, which is naturally missionary. We follow in the Redeemer’s footsteps that sends us out in mission, where He would go himself. Wherever we are sent, we take the good news of the Gospel in a dynamic and joyful way,” he said.

Missionary work is gratifying but, according to the priest, there are many challenges, especially for him, who is overseas. “Being a stranger challenges us to welcome the new, uninstall and unsettle the heart and how much it costs to us. One of the challenges here is the model of church which is different from the one I experienced in Brazil. I do not want to compare for where there are comparisons, there is always a loss. However, there are challenges as our mode of speaking, evangelizing in a joyful way in a similar culture but, at the same time, different from ours. There are misunderstandings but, at the same time, they understand the necessity of the new. There is also the risk of imposing our manners of being Church,” emphasizes Fr. Carlos José.

Even facing challenges, being able to work on pastoral mission makes him overjoyed. “Our missionary congregation, following the country’s estimate, has aged in these lands. We are four missionary confreres from Brazil here. We have the mission of working on a vocational project and we stumble on the lack of vocations and youth in the heart of the church,” he claimed.

The mission has its origins in the words of Jesus. Chapter 28 of St. Matthew says that Jesus sends out the apostles with the mission of evangelizing and the Church recognizes it is made for the mission, to evangelize. Pope Francis teaches especially to the courageous and daring youth to take on the mission, for Jesus called the Disciples.

Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus

Although very young, at the age of 15, Saint Therese joined the Carmelo de Lisieux, France, after his father’s support and an authorization straight from the Pope. The nine years living a cloistered life left a profound mark, offering the Christian world the astonishing image of a young nun who, albeit relegated to Carmel, lived immersed in ecclesial life.

There is no mission without the support of prayer and Saint Therese did this: devoted his whole life to praying for people. In 1927, two years after being canonized, she was proclaimed Patroness of Missions. She brought in her heart a very large pit, an ardor, a zeal, which she also learned. Her prayers, her little sacrifices were towards the benefit of the Church, to evangelize.[:es]Octubre es el mes dedicado a las misiones.
