[:en]As Carnival approach, youths manage to travel and party when they sometimes go overboard. However, for many of them, this date has a different meaning as they choose to be closer to the Eternal Father. Instead of going to street parties and parades, they prefer to spend the holiday as true Christians, devoting themselves to moments of prayer and spiritual retreats.

Iara Hellen Costa, who is an 18-years-old student, is one of those youths. She is the coordinator of the Commitment Project, developed by the Redemptorist Youth of Goiás. She is going to go to a retreat, together with other friends. “We will have a happy and fun carnival like any other person of our age, but we choose to gather to strengthen faith and communion with God”, she says.

She explains that the Project is of great importance as it aims to train and engage young people in the pastoral commitment and faith declaration. About 80 people are part of the group, which meetings happens every other week and are marked by a strong experience of love for the Father.

“Through this Project, many youths found another meaning to life. An example of it is those who have decided to replace Carnival festivities by a period of tranquility and reflection. “Motivated by the Redemptorist Youth Mission, we understand how important it is to spread God’s Word and be an example to others,” she points out.

As well as Iara Hellen, the 26-year-old assistant of Information Technology (IT), Michel Roberto Barbosa, is going to celebrate the date more quiet, without exaggeration. He says he wants to rest, enjoy the moments with family and praise the Father. “Unlike most people, I see Carnival as a great opportunity to take care of our mind. I try to go to Church and turn my eyes upon spiritual matters,” he says.

He also demonstrates concernment about the excesses committed during this festivity. “I do not condemn anyone who decides to join street parties and parades, but I always advise friends saying that it is necessary to be cautious. From the moment that one gives in to temptations and addictions, he stops celebrating in a healthy way and contribute to their estrangement from God,” affirms Michel Roberto.

Spiritual Group

Fr. Natalino Martins sees with good eyes the attitude of these young people and, defines it as “a great awakening for the Church.” According to him, the Carnival is a good and cheerful time, when it is possible to get together with people who love dance, music and art. However, he ponders that people progressively end up being apart from God, their neighbors and even themselves. Therefore, the party turns out being a trivialized event.

“The celebration itself is beautiful, but we can not ignore important values and principles that govern our lives. In first place, we must have rooted on our heart what is called self-love and respect ourselves. Otherwise, we run the risk of enjoying this festivity in a banal manner and turning this joyful event into a moment of pain, sadness and even death”, emphasizes the Redemptorist missionary.

Thus, he considers that the search for spiritual enrichment at this time of year is an commendable option and should be reinforced. “In a time of so many vices, drinks and so many other allurements, taking such decision reveals a hope for the Church. We must awaken this interest in our young people and increase the number of adherents of the ‘spiritual groups’ even more”, concludes Fr.
