[:en]The priest says, “’Hearts elevated’, not ‘phones elevated’. It makes me sorrowful when I see many of the faithful with their phones up. The mass is not a spectacle, but the meeting of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord.” The statement recently declared by Pope Francis, demonstrates all his discontent seeing Christians – and even clerics – using the device to make photos and videos during the services.

Thus, it is necessary to rethink this habit and have good sense when using smartphones and other technologies so that we do not deviate from the real purpose of celebrations: communion with God; the Redemptorist Missionary, Brother Diego Joaquim, recommends. According to him, while registering the aesthetics, the faithful may lose the essence of the mystery of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Lord.

“You need to know that we participate in the mass with all of our senses. Therefore, the eyes directed to the altar, the ears attentive to what is proclaimed, the body posture, everything is a sign that we are turned to the Lord and in communion with Him. It would be pleasant if we walked towards a more active and attentive participation” says Br. Diego.

Connection

Even though she has always her phone on hand, and stay tuned into social networks, the journalist Lethícia Avila ensures that, at the time of the celebrations, puts her phone aside and focuses on what the priest says. “When you go to a mass, it is necessary to disconnect from the world, turn our eyes upon God’s issues and meditate on His Word so that we leave strengthened by the faith. However, it becomes difficult with a smartphone around as it hampers concentration and distances us from the goal of going to Church,” says the faithful.

To avoid this distraction, Br. Diego Joaquim considers that the best thing to do is to turn off the mobile phone whenever you can or set it to silent mode. “The device can distract us because of app notifications. We waste the precious time that we should dedicate to God and we are drawn to other places. This way, you miss the mass,” analyzes the religious man.

Moderation

Even with the scathing opinion regarding the use of cell phones during celebrations, Br. Diego recognizes that technology can also be a great ally in evangelization as it approximates Christians and facilitates the access to the Word of God. “There are many applications of catholic interest, such as The Pope App, which reports Pope’s activities, and even the Eternal Father, that provides communion with the Sanctuary of the Divine Eternal Father”, he stated.

For him, there are tools that, when used at the right place and time, are quite beneficial to the devotees. However, it is necessary to have moderation. “If an application secludes me from my brother, deviate my attention from his needs, then it no longer helps me to be a christian. Its use is only useful when takes me closer to God and neighbor,” he says.

The Redemptorist Missionary concludes with a valuable advice: “The important thing is to turn our heart to the mystery that we are celebrating. Then, we can share the grace of participation in the Eucharist, as it is recommended at the end of every mass when the priest says, ‘go in peace, and may the Lord be with you’ which means that in communion with Christ I can effectively evangelize”.[:es]“El sacerdote dice corazones en alto y no celulares en alto.
