[:en]Today, from the moment you woke up so far, how many times have you complained? Of course many! This is because this habit is common in human behavior.

Excessive complaints are triggers for discussion, negative thoughts, cultivation of sorrows that can lead to misunderstandings and even diseases from emotional causes. Psychologist Jennifer Soares says it is not wrong to complain about what goes wrong and annoy us, the problem is doing it at any situation. “Complaining becomes an addiction. We complain about the weather when it is either cold or hot. We complain about having to wake up and work, our partner, children, and friends. By doing this we are taking a negative position towards life and people, becoming frustrated and sad,” she warns.

But how can we change such habit? The civil servant, Fernanda Valente, has managed to make this life change. “The challenge of 21 days without complaining was proposed by the director of the school where I take physical and self-knowledge activities. I got interested right away because I had already realized that the habit of complaining was bad for me and ruined my day.”

Fernanda says that when she was around people who complained too much, she felt bad and began to reflect whether she was also one of those people. “We are very used to complain about everything and always have a negative view of events, and this kind of behavior is encouraged by our society. Notice that when you are in a line at the market and complain about the delay, everyone will agree and complain along. But if you praise the service, people do not get too excited to do the same. This creates a stimulates us to complain more and more. And it is hard to be surrounded by ’whiners’ and be the only one among them who does not complain.”

The servant also explains that, in order to change her behavior, she had to pay close attention to her thoughts and words during the course of her day. “I observed my own thoughts and feelings before everything that happened during my routine. That attitude was important to not begin complaining without realizing I was doing so. So, in the first attempt I realized I had made a silly complaint but then I resumed the challenge. This is a strategy so that we stay alert and do not fall into the habit of unconsciously complaining.”

Word of God

In the Bible there are many passages that teach how complaining and murmuring do not please God’s heart and does not cooperate for the family environment and community. The people murmured against Moses in the wilderness. Even after God opened the Red Sea and free them from slavery, the Hebrews murmured against Jesus and his teachings.

Therefore, it is important to control thoughts and also the tongue, because it also hurts and kills. “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures have been tamed by mankind, but the tongue cannot be tamed by anyone. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (Jas 3,7-8)

Psychologist Jennifer Soares proposes various exercises to get rid of this habit and bring another perspective to life. “It is interesting to observe how many times we complain during the day. The result can be scary! From that point on, we can practice being quiet when something bothers us or try to see something positive from each bad moment we go through. Realizing that there are people who suffer more than us also helps because it makes us reflect that suffering is part of our human condition and that no one is immune to it.”

She also explains that “in some cases, when complaining becomes an addiction, a good exercise is to propose a gift. For example, to each complaint you must deposit a certain amount of money in a safe to donate it to some institution. Or every time you feel like complaining about something you pray a Hail Mary. In the first few days you may pray a rosary,” Jennifer plays. The psychologist also indicates a biblical passage that may inspire this change: “Not only so, but we[a] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Rm 5,3-4)

Fernanda says that nowadays not complaining is much easier and that she can already see differences in her daily life. “My life improved a lot after I had begun complaining less! The work became even more pleasurable, I began to relate better to the people around me, life problems became less and less frequent, the difficulties began to be overcome more easily etc. There are countless benefits in life! It is worth the effort to reeducate and stop complaining, ” she said.
